Examples of My Work
Construction
Examples of my work in progress shots of various pieces of costumes including corsets, mockups, bodices etc.
Corsets
A few corsets I have made for myself or others.
Red Queen
My "Red Queen" costume based on artwork by Sakizou. The stylising/Silhouette of the costume has elements of a few different time periods. The undergarments included an self designed underbust corset, a bum-pad and an eliptical crinoline cage. The dress included a base skirt, an open over-skirt, a detachable train, apron, bodice and veil. Everything including the wig was constructed by myself. The costume utilised both flat patterning and draping, cupped corset bodice, shell smocking, hand made flowers, beading, trim construction, wig construction, sleeve supports and more.
This dress was part of the Melbourne Championships of Cosplay, went to New Zealand to compete in a competition in Auckland and was on display for 9 months in the Melbourne Museum.
Original Designs - Course Work
During my course at Melbourne Polytechnic I had to design, pattern and construct a circus costume for one of the students at NICA. This included designing a costume with a body manipulation (padding to change the body shape) and creatinng a character from a poem we read as a class. I chose a mourning dove and went with a design of the warm coloured doves combined with the traditional use of black as a mourning colour.
Also while at Melbourne Polytechnic I learnt menswear and utilised this in my design and construction piece for my period costume unit. I designed one of the characters from La Boheme in a late Victorian style. The character is a poor writer in cold bohemian Paris so I designed his costume around comfort, warmth and that idea that he'd be sitting around a fireplace in his small home/apartment writting for days in the same clothes.
The costume included an undershirt that was tea dyed for aging (pictured the mock up), grey suit pants, a hand loomed scarf and a wool lined smocking jacket that was padded out and quilted for texture.
Jester
Jester has been my labour of love during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. When I wasn't working Jester was my project for myself that kept me busy when we were stuck inside. The costume is broken down into a corset, leggings, bodysuit, dress, bodice, skirt, overskirt, coat, tail and belt plus accessories. Over 500+ hours were put into this costume with over 120 of those in hand embroidery and 50 hours of hand beading.
The inside lining of the coat is completely quilted and each meeting point has a hot fix rhinestone. The bottom edge of the coat also has thousands of beads hand strung and sewn to it.
